Audrey Joins in Helping
Others On our most recent trip to MD Anderson, Audrey and I are in the lobby of the brain and spinal clinic (I think). I am in the wheelchair facing away from Audrey; behind me I hear Audrey talking to someone. I maneuver around to see a woman with pre-surgery markers on her head. Her husband is standing next to her. Both look normally scared. Audrey is asking if she has a brain tumor. “Yes” she says, surgery is tomorrow in fact. Audrey begins to relate our story and tries to comfort them by offering our website and encouragement card. The husband accepts the card as Audrey continues to explain the site and other nuggets of information. The husband seems grateful for the information and they begin to move away to their next appointment as I hear Audrey say her battle cry: ”Remember, no sugar. Cancer feeds on sugar. Check the diet on the website.” I was impressed and proud. I am sure Jesus smiled. She did a better job than I could have, relating to the couple and trying to help. Even more impressive, she approached them immediately when she saw the pre-surgery markers. It felt good to have her validate what I am trying to do. Apparently, example can be a teacher and a motivator.
