Even More Grace on Just an Ordinary Day I woke up early on a Tuesday morning. I woke up, but I was not ready to begin the fight for another day. I laid in bed and dreaded getting up. I felt these words, "Morris I love you. I have always loved you. I will be with you today as always. There are more lessons for you to learn." I got up. I faced the cold bathroom and the shower and I won. I fought the getting dressed battle and I won again! However, there was a moment there where I could not button my freshly washed blue jeans when I thought I might lose the dressing battle. I went to work, ate lunch with my partners, then went to rehab where Julie worked on my shoulder. I think we made some progress on the shoulder, perhaps for some reason I had decided to do my exercises over the weekend and again on Monday. During PT, I walked on the treadmill, but once on the stair master I crashed. I could not go on. I had to lay down. Shannon and Michael wouldn't let me just lay there and give up... thank goodness. Michael stretched me and I whined. Back at work I got a call from Kathy Malone, a seven year cancer survivor who fought and won the right side paralysis war. Kathy told me how difficult rehab was for her and I was inspired. Kathy's story is under the new section on the home page named "Survivor Stories". Kathy emphasized the importance of always doing your rehab exercises at home. I knew that, but I had been slacking off a lot. Back at home, Dr. Polk called and in the course of the conversation said, "Morris, just going to rehab and not exercising at home does no good. You must exercise every day". It took both Kathy and Dr. Polk, but now I am seriously back on track with a new sense of importance and urgency for doing the home exercises. I exercised hard this evening, even though I went to rehab today. No more foolishness about not exercising at home. My shoulder feels much better and Audrey says my right and left side shoulders are even for the first time and there's a new section on the site with Kathy's story. |
